Courageous Steps for Parkinson's

Small Steps - Huge Strides

Introducing Jackie Russell and David Zid's "Delay the Disease - Starting a Parkinson's Exercise Class in Your Community" and How your 2009 donation will be used...

Courageous Steps for Parkinson’s is eager to introduce to Ohio Northeastern Parkinson’s Community, David Zid, ACE, APG certified functional fitness trainer and author of the book/DVD, Delay the Disease – Exercise and Parkinson’s Disease, and Jackie Russell, RN, BSN, CNOR, project editor for Delay the Disease and their new program, “Delay the Disease – Starting A Parkinson’s Exercise Class in Your Community”.

Their course is designed to teach you how to create and lead a safe and effective community-based Parkinson’s-specific exercise program.  More importantly, you will learn ways to motivate and inspire.  This will encourage the participants to continue to exercise daily at home, which will yield the most robust results.

The course is designed for anyone interested in initiating a program, including professionals in PT, OT, fitness trainers, Parkinson’s organizational staff, and any individual with a dedicated interest in helping the Parkinson’s community create an exercise prmarketing the class) and also provide the leader with specific instructions on Parkinson’s problems, exercise solutions,  methods of teaching and program ideas. David’s basic focus is that a successful instructor should bring inspiration, humor and motivation to the class.  These concepts will bring the participants back week after week; the class will grow and enthusiasm for regular exercise will spread throughout your local Parkinson’s community.  This course will also demonstrate an example of David Zid’s teaching techniques as he leads an actually class for the PD group in your area.  So gather all your “People with Parkinson’s”, they will also participate in a portion of this 2 day seminar.

Russell and Zid’s goal is to help tailor a community exercise program to your particular group’s needs.  Empowering individuals with PD to take control of their disease with exercise is the ultimate reward.

This program was designed by David Zid and Jackie Russell.  They have led their own class based on their book, Delay the Disease for over four years with great success.  It has been reviewed and supported by physical therapists, movement disorder neurologists, and other physicians. David and Jackie have been featured speakers at numerous PD symposia throughout the country and decided to create this program at the request of many groups that wanted to start their own classes.  They are excited to be able to present this course and we are proud they attend our 2009 walk to dispaly, motivate, and lead our particpants in a few techniques!
